Using GI Syndrome Data as an Early Warning Tool for Norovirus Outbreak Activity

چکیده
Objective To assess the relationship between emergency department (ED) and urgent care center (UCC) chief complaint data for gastrointestinal (GI) illness and reported norovirus (NV) outbreaks to develop an early warning tool for NV outbreak activity. The tool will provide an indicator of increasing NV outbreak activity in the community allowing for earlier public health action to mitigate NV outbreaks.

Influence of Novel Norovirus GII.4 Variants on Gastroenteritis Outbreak Dynamics in Alberta and the Northern Territories, Canada between 2000 and 2008
BACKGROUND Norovirus GII.4 is the predominant genotype circulating worldwide over the last decade causing 80% of all norovirus outbreaks with new GII.4 variants reported in parallel with periodic epidemic waves of norovirus outbreaks. The circulating new GII.4 variants and the epidemiology of norovirus outbreaks in Alberta, Canada have not been described. Our hypothesis is that the periodic epi...
متن کاملMarked genomic diversity of norovirus genogroup I strains in a waterborne outbreak.
Marked norovirus (NoV) diversity was detected in patient samples from a large community outbreak of gastroenteritis with waterborne epidemiology affecting approximately 2,400 people. NoV was detected in 33 of 50 patient samples examined by group-specific real-time reverse transcription-PCR. NoV genotype I (GI) strains predominated in 31 patients, with mixed GI infections occurring in 5 of these...
متن کاملEmergence of New Norovirus Strain GII.4 Sydney — United States, 2012
Noroviruses are the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, including foodborne outbreaks, in the United States. Hospitalization and mortality associated with norovirus infection occur most frequently among elderly persons, young children, and immunocompromised patients. Noroviruses belong to the family Caliciviridae and can be grouped into five genogroups (GI through GV), which are further ...
متن کامل1719Public health response to a school-based norovirus gastroenteritis outbreak: Environmental sampling as a novel investigative tool
Background. Norovirus outbreaks in schools can amplify rapidly through multiple routes of transmission, and have led to campus closures. Ensuring implementation of transmission-prevention measures is challenging in large secondary schools, where exclusion criteria for ill persons may be limited, and sufficient environmental surface disinfection may be difficult to achieve. During a norovirus ou...
متن کاملDesign and Development of Early Warning System for Desertification and Land Degradation
Early warning systems are key components of strategies to reduce risk. This research, by adopting a systematic approach in the management of the risk of desertification and by including previously developed models and systems, offers an integrated efficient structure in terms of early warning for the risk of desertification as a pilot system for semi-arid areas of west Golestan Province in IRAN...
